Ylang-Ylang essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the ylang-ylang tree, a species native to Indonesia. It is often used in perfumes and has a variety of uses in aromatherapy. It also relieves symptoms of depression, if you struggle with both anxiety and depression (as many people do).
Orange essential oil is extracted from the peel of the orange fruit and has a wide range of uses. It is often used as a sedative and is a perfect remedy for insomnia or just those annoying nights of tossing and turning. You can also use it as an antiseptic and even cook with it.
Bergamot essential oil comes from the bergamot fruit and is a widely used sedative. It also contains antibiotic and antidepressant properties and serves many other functions. Try using this essential oil the next time you need to go to bed early but simply can’t shut down your mind.
Valerian essential oil is a highly effective sedative that is commonly used to relieve sleep disorders. It is extracted from the valerian flower which is native to Europe and Asia. Valerian essential oil has additional uses including treating gastrointestinal issues and lowering blood pressure.
Needless to say, lavender essential oil has a relaxing effect that can quickly put anyone at ease. It is extracted from lavender flowers and is a favorite among many aromatherapy enthusiasts. Cedarwood essential oil is extracted from the wood of the cedarwood tree and is used as a stress reliever and sedative. It is also sometimes used to treat Eczema and contains antiseptic properties. Its woody scent may remind you of the forest and put you in an even more tranquil state.
While everyone knows that chamomile tea has a calming effect, few know the benefits of Roman Chamomile essential oil. Extracted from chamomile flowers, this essential oil is highly effective at getting people to sleep. It also helps relieve digestive issues and treats inflammation.
How to Use Essential Oils
- Diffuse them with an electric diffuser
- Diffuse them with a candle diffuser
- Place a few drops into a candle and light it
- Mix with a carrier oil and massage into skin
- Place a few drops on a cloth and inhale the scent before bed
- Place a few drops on a small pillow and place it next to your bed
- Add a few drops to your nighttime bath
Each of the essential oils on this list has a pleasing scent, but you can choose the one that smells the best to you for an overall relaxing experience.
