A new social media platform exclusively for physicians was launched this week. The free platform, named Roon<\/a>, was co-founded by Vikram Bhaskaran and Arun Ranganathan, former executives at Pinterest, who serve as CEO and CTO, respectively, alongside Dr. Rohan Ramakrishna, a neurosurgeon and the startup’s president.<\/p>\n

The platform aims to address a growing need within the medical community for an appropriate online space where practitioners can connect, debate, and share clinical knowledge, according to Dr. Ramakrishna.<\/p>\n

While AI tools such as Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT can effectively summarize published literature, they lack the “collective wisdom” of physicians, including their unique judgment and case-based experience, he explained. <\/p>\n

Dr. Ramakrishna emphasized that Roon combines two elements: AI-based research synthesis and structured peer discussions that reflect real medical events like case conferences and journal clubs.<\/p>\n

“Ultimately, what we are is an infrastructure for the best medical conversations. We want to provide this infrastructure to truly unlock the wisdom, experience, nuances, and judgment that are trapped in the minds of physicians. There is so much medicine and health that is unpublished, that is not on the web simply because it exists in the brains of doctors,” stated Dr. Ramakrishna.<\/p>\n

The platform is designed to expand upon informal exchanges that typically occur among physicians, such as group discussions, sidewalk consultations, or casual conversations at meetings, which are often inaccessible beyond small circles. Roon aims to bring forth and scale this tacit knowledge.<\/p>\n

However, this is not the first online forum for physician interaction. Doximity<\/a>, launched in 2010 as a social network for doctors, as well as public platforms like Twitter (or X) and TikTok, have fostered online communities for medical professionals.<\/p>\n

Dr. Ramakrishna contends that Roon distinguishes itself from these platforms because they are not primarily designed for deep clinical discourse or community building.<\/p>\n

“No one uses Doximity as a place for developing a community among physicians. That is not a use case anyone associates with Doximity. They have their clinical decision support tool, their anonymous composer, the voting for US News and World Report (hospital rankings) – these are the main interactions physicians are most aware of,” he noted.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Roon aspires to become the foundational infrastructure for meaningful medical communication, according to Dr. Ramakrishna.<\/p>\n

Beyond clinical discussions, he envisions Roon expanding into broader conversations among physicians\u2014topics that address ethics, policies, and personal values. One of the company’s main missions is to “make social research” by centering journal articles within discussions rather than simply summarizing them.<\/p>\n

Regarding the startup’s business model, Dr. Ramakrishna stated that “the goal at this stage is to truly create something that physicians around the world value.” In the future, he indicated that the company might potentially monetize through sponsorships, educational partnerships, and marketplaces.<\/p>\n

Overall, the objective of Roon is to transform fragmented conversations between physicians into a centralized and scalable source of medical knowledge and information.<\/p>\n
